I was reading a question from a new runner the other day, which went something like this:
“I was talking to a friend who said I wasn’t allowed to wear my race t-shirt (that she received in a swag bag) to the race since I hadn’t ‘earned’ it yet.”
She was about to run her first 5k and excited to don her pretty new event shirt for the run. Now she was questioning that and her excitement was turning into some self-doubt about what she should and shouldn’t do for her first 5k.
Let’s get this out of the way: unless the rules of the even specifically list something like no strollers, no dogs, no ear buds, etc., then you are pretty much free to go about running or walking said race in any form or fashion you choose.
If you want to rock that event shirt, do it.
Want to run in a tutu? Get your tulle on.
Want to wear funny socks and a giant stuffed turkey hat? No fowl (see what I did there? I know, it was terrible, but I couldn’t help myself.)
Feel like wearing one of those fabulous T-Rex costumes? Pter it up. (Pter…tear…too much? I know, I know.)
The point is, whatever makes you feel excited about your run or whatever you can do to add more enjoyment to your event, do it. I’ve donned my fun pink and orange tutu for more than one event, it makes me happy. I’ve seen runners with a stick attached to their shoulders dangling a beer can in front of them in marathons.
Don’t let those fuddy duddies dampen your spirit. The event is for you and you alone – make it all yours.
